The organization of care services for elderly people When we grow old there is sometimes the unfortunate feeling that we have been placed at the bottom of the pile. In practical terms this means that we have to live with the realization that there is a lot more to life than the rat race that we have been following. In some communities it is the responsibility of government to ensure that the elderly members of the community are well looked after. They will build and fund care homes with the express objective of ensuring that these vulnerable members of the community are not disadvantaged by the fleeting changes that affect that community. There are other communities where the elderly people are almost revered in terms of the king of care that they receive from the extended family members. In such communities you will find that the centralized care homes play a less significant model. The best way to examine this is to compare the Scandinavian model with the African traditional model. In the Scandinavian model you are expected to work and make contributions towards the tax base. Those that are poor will get some welfare support. In fact the state benefits in some of these countries are very generous. They also provide fuel allowances and other essential items for the community when members grow old. In the African traditional model the family is totally responsible for the care of the elders. They get no state benefits and in most cases their contributions to the pension pot are stolen by some corrupt officials. The USA system lies in the middle where you are expected to build up you retirement package through private investments and savings. The provision of care facilities is then regulated by government authorities to ensure that there are minimum standards in all the establishments within the jurisdiction. There are various divisions within the care industry that are meant to widen the options for people that find themselves in such a situation. To begin with you have the private provision that is paid for by the client out of their income or savings. These are normally the premium providers and they can right up to hotel standards. The only problem is that they are very expensive and it might not be worth your while to even think about dealing with the different providers in this context. The second category relates to the ones that are owned by private companies but then provide services on behalf of the state. This is the partnership scheme that has characterized the center right politics of Britain in the years of Tony Blair. There are some questions about whether a private company cares about the interests of government agencies. In fact the supervision of these establishments has proved to be problematic. The last category is wholly owned by the state and there is very little private involvement. Such facilities are normally free of charge at the point of delivery.
